Are digital safe spaces out of touch with reality? “Yes, but...” That was my answer at re:publica 2025 that took place from 26-28 May 2025 at STATION Berlin and where I had the opportunity to talk about this topic. Safe spaces are historically & socially necessary – but in the digital space they come up against a systemic limit: surveillance capitalism. Polarization is not collateral damage – it's business strategy. If you are constantly being watched, if every interaction is stored, analyzed and exploited – isn't security an illusion? I dared to conduct a thought experiment based on accountability principles such as “permission to be raggedy”. What do you need for a functioning hybrid model? I explain that in my talk.
